Katy Perry! Loved by so many, possibly even disliked by many. I on the other hand am a huge fan. My friends make fun of me for being a Katy Perry fan. I typically don’t go down the road blasting her music with the windows down. Partly because I’m not a teenage teeny bopper or whatever these pesky kids are called now a days. But some of her music is very uplifting and inspiring in a way.
For example, When I hear the song “Roar” by Katy Perry I hear something entirely different. Each person takes lyrics and applies them to their own life which is a great thing to do and why music is the universal language.
To me, Roar is a song about breaking free of credit card debt and conquering it. It shows how debt can take an evil grasp at you, bring you down and push you past your breaking point of financial ruin!
Here are the lyrics to her song and my interpretation of how it applies to defeating credit card debt: (My interpretation in green parenthesis.)
“Roar”
I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath – (I used to run my card everywhere with no understanding of what debt does to me)
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess – (Scared to stop using my credit card and see what the final damage is)
So I sat quietly, agree politely – (I continued making minimum monthly payments)
I guess that I forgot I had a choice – (A ha moment! credit card debt sucks!)
I let you push me past the breaking point – (I let you take advantage of me and maxed out my card, debt up to my eyeballs)
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything – (No one ever taught me about finances, so I ran up the cards to the max)
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!) – (Maxed out in debt, but I finally paid it all off, Hey!!!)
Already brushing off the dust – (Card paid off, now I can cut it up into tiny pieces)
You hear my voice, you hear that sound – (Me singing, hear that sound of ka-ching!!!)
Like thunder gonna shake the ground – (Money rolling into my pocket now!)
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!) – (Damn credit card had me down, now its paid off!!)
Get ready ’cause I’ve had enough – (Now that I understand how debt works, I’m never succumbing to your nasty credit card debt again)
I see it all, I see it now – (I now completely understand how bad credit card debt is for me)
[Chorus:]
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire – (I have the financial knowledge now, I destroy debt, dancing through all my old paid off debt statements)
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar – (Cause I’m financially savvy now and you’re going to hear me roar!)
Louder, louder than a lion – (Louder, louder than a lion)
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar
Now I’m floating like a butterfly – (Now I have financial freedom, floating like a butterfly)
Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes – (I pay everything off cash now, I learned my lesson)
I went from zero, to my own hero – (I went from debt to financial freedom)
[Chorus:] Repeat
End of song.
Do you see it now?! It’s amazing how this song is really about conquering credit card debt and letting the whole world know she’s figured out the secret to being financially free. And it starts by not having credit card debt folks!

Could do something on Eye of the Tiger by Foreigner
Going through your back catalog of posts, good stuff!
Ha! Yeah thanks man! Eye of the Tiger would be great. I could probably create a whole new blog just doing this kind of stuff to songs. So many good ones out there and you need to add is a little creativity.
Im glad you are enjoying my older posts. This one was one of the first I wrote. Seems like a long time ago but it was only a few months ago.
Ha! I love this!! I was actually just listening to this song, it puts a little “oomph” in my writing any time I’m feeling stuck or powerless.
I havent heard that song in a while but I like it, I dont care what anyone says! Plus all I hear is her telling me how she got rid of her credit card debt! ;p
